Dawning Reality

Every day, nay -- every hour, the fact of our upcoming move becomes more real to me.

Today the moving man came to give me an estimate. It was entirely reasonable and he has a great reputation around here, so that's who we're going to use.

It was pretty amusing to talk to him as we went around the house. He kept trying to tell me that I couldn't have open boxes (I know) and I'd want to pack the lamp shades (I know) and wrap this big mirror we have in cardboard (I know), maybe several layers of cardboard (I know), and so on and so forth, et cetera.

I mentioned that I've moved quite a few times and pretty much know the drill, but he waived that away. He informed me that he'd moved the same people several times and they always made the same mistakes. Uh huh. I just nodded and smiled, and didn't tell him that of the umpteen times I've moved, I can't remember the last time anything I packed got broken.

When it comes to packing (and the rest of my life a few other areas) I am a complete obsessive-compulsive anal-retentive nut. For instance: I packed up most of our stemware the other day (naturally I left out a few wine glasses). Each glass was wrapped in tissue, then bubble wrap, then layered between bubblewrap, then any open spots were stuffed with packing material. I still had bubble wrap from our last move, neatly folded in a large  box. So yes, Mr. Mover Man, I know how to pack a house.

Tomorrow my goal is to take pictures of everything we want to sell or give away so I can post them on Craig's List Thursday. Take it away -- take it all away.

I have one weekend left for packing. The next weekend after this I'll be visiting my Maternal Ancestor, and we move the following Friday.

Ack.

It's in the genes. Sorry about the Busman's Holiday that weekend. I'm having nightmares over what awaits us in that storage shed.

What?! I didn't know you were going that soon! Do you need any help with anything? Yikes, I thought you had until the end of August.

WE'RE GONNA DIE!!! I cannot believe how fast this whole thing is moving - I go to visit my school for the first time this week, and after that, everything goes nuts... why on earth are we going on vacation now?? Oh yeah, cuz we're all completely INSANE. And its also genetic.
And I have to move twice. *grumble grumble* At least I get to go to New York.

Did he "waive" your comments away, or did he "wave" them away? I have to know!

Holy crap. I thought you weren't going until late August.

We need beverages.

We DO need beverages. A lot of beverages.

Um, I meant he waived the comments as unimportant, as in to dismiss. But since I said "away" I should have used "waved." My bad. Of course my mother catches me.

However, I'm a bit shocked that I STILL haven't been called on the puns.

Oh, and the only time I've ever had something broken in a move was when I dropped it BEFORE I packed it.

I hear you on the excessive wrapping. :)

Does this mean that you are actually moving the 5th or is it the 12th, I didn;t realize it was happening so soon. Where are you going on vacation? Have fun because then the works starts and won't end for a few years, but it will be worth it. Mom L

The ONLY time in about 35 moves I ever remember having a moving company was when we went from Mexico to Chile and the government paid for it. We must have also had one from Chile to California since that was still government. Of course, all that was before you were born, caboose.

Nah, we had one one time after I was born. Can't remember at all which time, but it might have been one of the cross-country moves.
