For those of you (hi Mom!) who want more details of the trip to drop off GirlChild, here you go. For the rest of you, I'll try to come up with something mildly amusing later.
We got into CollegeTown hours before we could check in to the hotel, so we drove around the campus, got lunch at a funky little granola-bar type lunch place, drove around the town for a while, and ogled the town's old buildings.
When we stopped at a Starbucks for a desperately needed caffeine fix, I realized that we were in the same building where David Boies has his firm. GirlChild patiently patted my arm and said, "Yes, Mother dear. It is terribly exciting to be in this building." A group of boringly dressed men carrying briefcases and looking a bit worn and rumpled walked by, "Look! My people!" Heh.
Obviously that was the high point of the trip. However, we went on to have dinner at a very nice steak house where the waiter had the audacity to suggest Bananas Foster for dessert, and then went to see "Must Love Dogs." Cute, but not Cusak's best movie ever.
Thursday we hit the college bookstore and got Girl Child's books (ow), then went on a massive shopping spree at Target for dorm room supplies, then we were Really Quite Bad at the nearby mall. Sunglasses, shoes... clothes...
After lugging our purchases back to the hotel we thought we'd walk to a restaurant somewhere, work up an appetite on the way. Well. This may not have been our best idea ever.
First we strolled down the main drag, then turned down another busy street with all the pubs and whatnot, then turned again down a more residential street thinking that we'd circle around toward the other side of the main drag. Only, the next street didn't go through. Nor the next.
It was starting to get late by now, and while the first people we passed were sitting on their stoops enjoying the evening air we were beginning to pass others who were, um, enjoying less legal things. Yeah. Then GirlChild suggested we cross the street to avoid being hit by items being thrown from second floor windows, as someone was being evicted. The sun was sinking, and still we were walking. Eventually, nearly a mile from where we first turned, we found a street going back to the main road.
We were fine, no one bothered us (although we got some funny looks), and we did finally get some dinner.
Friday, I dropped her off at school and flew away. *sniff* I did have a heck of a time getting my suitcase closed, with the new shoes and all, but I managed.
There you go, lots of gory details.
