New Costume Idea: Rocky

The nose, it is broken. And broken badly--surgery is scheduled for Friday.

Ugh! How are we going to cope? She'll miss class, not good. I'm swamped and behind, not good. TFL is, as always, facing deadlines at work. This is going to get ugly. I've never dealt with nose surgery before. Can someone please tell me that it's easy with a quick recovery time and GirlChild will be up on her feet and as beautiful as ever (but with new and improved breathing capacity) in no time?

But the good news is that she now has her Halloween costume figured out (no small matter at an art school). She'll be Rocky. As in Balboa, not Bullwinkle.

My best friend had nose surgery in high school (supposedly it was for a deviated septum, but I'm pretty sure she just wanted a nose job). Stock up on frozen peas and movies that will not make her laugh. My friend said laughing was the most painful thing the first few days. As far as recovery goes, she did feel good fairly quickly!

Yay. Good news, I'll queue up some documentaries on Netflix and make chicken and biscuits after she's better! (with the peas, you know).

She'll have a cast glued to her face for a week, and her nostrils will be packed full of cotton. The hardest part isn't the pain -- at least not if they give you good painkillers (Darvocet worked for me) -- but the week of mouthbreathing. It is SO HARD to have only one single functioning airway, esp when you want to do other things with it, like eat or brush your teeth. Tip: serve her lots of broth and smoothies, and have on hand plenty of bendy straws.

Rats! Sorry to hear about GC's nasal misadventure. She had a fine nose before, and should again.

I actually don't think they pack your nostrils anymore (or at least they did't mine). They put little sponges that dissolve to keep things in place. The NeilMed Sinus Rinse is wonderfully soothing and much more gentle than the WaterPik (they usually suggest you get one or the other and you have to wash pretty much constantly for the first few days and then about 4-6x/day after that for several months). I was back up and ready to go about 3-4 days after my surgery.

Oh, and I had my surgery on a Wednesday morning and stayed at my parents' house. The hardest part was the first 24 hours because you have to keep ice on fairly constantly so she was up all night because I was too drugged to do it myself. By Thursday afternoon, though, I was doing fine on my own getting my ice and doing my nasal washes. Maybe your daughter can schedule for a Thursday or Friday so your work won't be too badly impacted? I was back at work on Monday, btw, and doing contract work from home on Friday.

Thank you all very much! You've given me some very helpful information.

Not just a deviated septum - fractured bone as well. I'm so not looking forward to this surgery. Ugh.
