I firmly believe that education is a primary element of democratic[1] government, and good communication tools are inextricably linked to both education and successful government. Therefore, I think this is one of the better ideas I have come across in some time.
The idea is to provide cheap, tough laptops to people all over the world. Get them up to speed on reading and the internets and all that sort of good stuff, and open up a view of the rest of the world to them. Yes, it will spread American culture.[2] But it will spread literacy too. I’m all in favor of that.
Besides, the technology is just cool.

I agree- I love this idea. It's like Heifer International, but more high tech. Helping people help themselves- a cow, access to world thought, etc.
