Ten Thousand Five CDs

I'm staring at my our CD collection. It's not small. Currently they're stacked all over our dining room, smashed into nooks and odd shelves, stashed wherever we could cram them after we sold our china cabinet that held a goodly portion of them (all those cds in the bottom--I'd forgotten about those).

Our thought is that we don't want to move these hundreds (seriously, at a rough guess at least 600) of cases with us right away. We're going to be living in a walk-in closet somewhere. So we're going to try to be diligent and make sure they're all on my laptop, good old Johnny D., before we go.

Um. I'm really not sure if they'll all fit... or what I would do when Johnny eventually gets replaced and is allowed to retire in honor. The thought of indulging some has crossed my mind, but I waffle.

So if anyone has any thoughts or good ideas, let me know.

I had a dream (nightmare) where my computer crashed and we lost all the pics and video of Landon's first year. I immediately went on amazon and bought this: http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-Rugged-Portable-Drive-Cherry/dp/B000W6O08A/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1215875336&sr=8-1. A portable hard drive. It was about $100, has 250 gigs of storage, and is very sleek and pretty. You just stick it in your USB port and save or work off it. I just read that it will hold approximately 5000 hours of music, so that should cover your collection... You could use it to play your iTunes off of, but you'd have to have it connected when you did (it's small so that wouldn't be too much of a problem) but it's biggest role is in reassuring you that all will not be lost should Johnny D suffer an untimely death or accident. And it makes it easy to transfer songs to a new computer when you get one (an iPod won't do that).

And did I mention it's pretty? and comes in many colors?

the link didn't work - just go to amazon and type in "iomega portable hard drive" to find it

I just came in to rec a portable external HD as well! Great minds, or not. ;)

I'm slowly ripping my 400+ CDs onto my external hard drive (lovingly named Bob, for no reason at all) and I adore it.
