We all have bad days. We all have terrible days, where insults pile on injuries piled on top of more insults and injuries. But some days you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Watching one of your dear friends go through a day like that is awful.
Bureaucrats and mindless obedience to protocol must be responsible for so much inefficiency and misery. It's tempting to say that people need to be smacked upside the head and reminded of what's important in life; but the people who need that slap aren't necessarily the people in front of you, giving you the bad news and going through the motions.
When you see a baby nestled in his father's muscled arms, his tiny body limp with sleep, you know that for that moment all is right with his world.
