Uncle Piano Tuner came into town yesterday. He taught Boy how to play gin rummy, and it's clear that Boy will be able to pay his way through college by playing for a penny a point. That is, he will if he learns to lose as graciously as he wins.
Uncle Piano Tuner is a great story teller. Last night he told the story of a friend of his who was charged with a horrible crime. He hired a cheap local lawyer instead of the shark from the big city nearby, and now he's spending the rest of his life in jail.
Why do people think it's a good idea to skimp on a lawyer when their LIVES are at stake?
This guy's lawyer failed to present several pieces of key information, failed to rehearse his witnesses, failed to have a psychologist examine the main witnesses for the prosecution (crucial in this case), failed to get his innocent client acquitted. It was the first time the lawyer had ever defended this kind of case. The prosecuting attorney happened to be his nephew, both attorneys and the judge had worked in the same office a few years earlier... I'm forgetting many of the hideous details, I'm sure, but suffice it to say the case made for an ugly story.
The point is not that this guy hired a lawyer from a small town, the point is he hired someone completely unqualified for the job. Heaven forbid I should ever be charged with a crime, much less a felony involving serious prison time, I hope I would have the sense to hire the best, hungriest, meanest, most-sharklike lawyer I could afford. What is my freedom and even more, my good name, worth? Everything.
